Despite your best efforts, it’s still possible for your child to develop a cavity in one or more of their teeth. If we catch a cavity during one of your child’s routine appointments, we will often recommend a filling to repair damage and restore the tooth. Without treatment, cavities will only get bigger. Placing a filling while your child’s cavity is still manageable will preserve their smile and strengthen the damaged tooth.
Stainless steel crowns are preferred for children who have larger cavities or fractures in their baby teeth because they are durable, affordable, and can protect the remaining tooth structure. Stainless steel crowns shield the entire tooth (like a helmet) to safeguard and preserve the tooth until it falls out naturally.
Vital nerve therapy preserves and maintains nerve tissue (pulp) that has been damaged by cavities or an injury. This therapy includes indirect pulp capping and pulpotomies. Indirect pulp capping can be used if the decay has not extended to the nerve yet. Indirect pulp capping involves the application of a thin layer of special medicine, intended to protect and strengthen the remaining dentin.
The medicine is applied directly to the dentin structure and the tooth is then restored with a stainless steel crown. A pulpotomy is also called a “baby root canal”. Pulpotomies involve removing part of the affected nerve from a primary tooth, then “capping” the tooth with a stainless steel crown.
Silver diamine fluoride (commonly called SDF) uses a special blend of compounds, including silver and fluoride, to destroy bacteria in a cavity and help slow down the progression of cavities. This treatment is non-invasive and can be performed relatively quickly, so Dr. Yasi and Dr. Sal recommend SDF as an alternative to fillings for very young children or patients with special needs.
Primary tooth extractions are used to treat injuries, severely decayed and infected teeth, and to remove teeth which may pose an obstacle for the eruption of permanent teeth. If your child's tooth is damaged or you feel that your child may need a tooth extraction, give us a call today to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists if you are located in Jupiter or Palm Beach Garden.
If your child needs a primary tooth extracted for any reason, or otherwise prematurely loses a baby tooth, space maintainers ensure that their oral development stays on track. Space maintainers keep the surrounding teeth from shifting and help your child’s adult teeth grow in properly.
